Subject: Mr. Big Shot

The fatherly charade continues. Rob called me downstairs when he got home, as if I’d be excited to see him. I get down there and he’s holding two Mariners tickets, big grin on his razor-nicked mug. So guess where I’m going tomorrow. Which, yeah, hard to complain about going to a ball game, though it would be nicer if I could have gone with you or some random stranger out of the phone book. Unfortunately Rob expects to go with me and wasn’t just giving me the seats.

But get this part, I ask him where he got them, and he shrugs smugly and goes, “work,” like he’s some big-shot exec with perks that are the envy of every mere mortal in town. Turns out his boss has season tickets and doesn’t use them half the time, so he leaves them in a drawer and anyone who works there can take them. I asked if that was new this year, and he said no, he’s always had them. And I’m thinking he’s the biggest dickhead of any dad that ever lived, because he’s never mentioned it before now. Sounds like he and Donovan have gone a few times, but did he ever think, hey, my son likes baseball, I bet he’d like some free tickets? No, apparently not. So here he is trying to squeeze in past the deadline for father of the year nominations and it turns out he’s been an even more thoughtless flop than I figured he was, and the bar for that was already rolling on the floor.

I was about to tell him to be careful shoving the tickets up his ass so he doesn’t get papercuts, but Janice walked in and gave me that “he’s trying, be nice” look, so I just bit my tongue instead. They’re gone now to their counseling thing. I guess I should just be grateful I didn’t get roped into that again.

Subject: M’s game

Not sure where to start. How about with the part where it was a 7:10 game and Rob didn’t come home tonight until 6:45. If he’d left the tickets around here I would have hopped a bus and gone myself. But he had them in his wallet, so no luck there. Turns out he was at an AA meeting, so I’m not allowed to be pissed off about that because he’s Mr. Golden Angel Boy now. But even with his wings, we couldn’t fly to the game and we didn’t wind up getting there until the bottom of the 2nd inning. Of course, then he wants to get something to eat before we sit down, so there goes another 15 minutes, because he wanted a burrito from one stand and a lemonade from another, so we had to wait in two different lines. By the time we finally got to our seats the score was 4-3, us.
